Habitat For Humanity Helps Homeless Veteran

Habitat for Humanity has been on a mission to end veteran homelessness in River City.

The organization got one step closer to fulfilling their mission when they dedicated a home to veteran family, Gail and Rex Perry.

Rex is a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War. He and his wife have battled poverty, sickness, and homelessness for years.

A year ago, Rex got incredibly sick and lost his job.

A few months late Gail was diagnosed with breast cancer.

At this point the couple was on and off the streets and living out of a car.

But with help from Habitat for Humanity the couple was able to fight their way back to a safe and stable life.

Healing Heroes Network (HHN) has been providing financial assistance to our veterans since 2008. As a non-profit organization, HHN's primary focus is to provide the means for wounded warriors to get the treatment and therapies they deserve and need.

VETERAN EMBARKS ON 3,500 MILE PADDLEBOARD TRIP

Sgt. 1st Class Josh Collins served more than 20 years in Army special operations. However after this time served, the injuries that Collins sustained began to take a disastrous toll.

Collins was loaded up with prescriptions from his doctors and also dangerously self-medicated with alcohol.

In 2014 his life took a dark turn and he was hospitalized at a VA Rehabilitation Center for three months.

Collins admitted that his life and movement was in a constant state of vertigo. However the second he began to explore paddle boarding through a recreational therapy event, his world stood still and he could begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Collins continued his new hobby and started to piece his life back together.

However something was missing.

"I wanted to do something epic to raise awareness to show that with TBI and going through all the things that I went through and complete life crash, that someone can come back", Collins shared.

It was soon after this realization that he began his trek to stand-up paddleboard from Corpus Christi, Texas, to New York City.

At times the heat and danger during his trip can be more than unnerving but Collins desperately wants his journey to symbolize the struggle that veterans endure after service and combat.

All funds that are raised during his trip will be donated directly to Task Force Dagger Foundation which helped him endlessly during his rehabilitation.

Veteran Receives Financial Help from Volunteer

IndyStar

Doyle Aten is a 73-year old veteran who had an unfortunate incident last July. On that hot summer day. Aten fell off the roof of his garage and was immediately launched in an ambulance and rushed to the nearest hospital.

Even though Aten repeatedly requested that he be taken to the local VA medical center, the ambulance took him to a different hospital.

Unfortunately this decision left Aten with an astounding medical bill of over $13,000. This was amount that he would simply never be able to pay off.

Aten tried multiple times to appeal to the VA in order to seek financial help, but the VA repeatedly denied his claims.

Desperate for help, Aten reached out to IndyStar Call for Action consumer assistance hotline.

The hotline is a national nonprofit that is has the help of volunteers in order to resolve consumer problems.

IndyStar was able to get Aten's complete hospital bill paid for by the VA! An amazing feat that Aten simply couldn't accomplish on his own.

Veteran Creates Cartoons To Raise Funds

Bruce Hopkins is a retired Army Col. with a very special talent.

However it took a significant event for Hopkins to sprout his amazing fundraising plan.

This event took place when Hopkins reconnected with a fellow Vietnam veteran that he served with over 45 years ago.

His friend explained how he lost his civilian retirement when his company went under and in connection how the VA also denied him benefits in relation to PTSD.

He was far too sick to work and needed help.

However when Hopkins reached out to his friend to reconnect with his situation it was too late.

He had passed away two weeks later of respiratory failure due to leukemia.

After hearing of his friend's passing, Hopkins sprung into action.

He immediately began creating and selling original cartoon prints and donating the money to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Hopkins draws on his own experiences when creating these dark humor cartoons and has seen a considerable amount of success thus far.

Veteran Holding Sick Owl Will Melt Your Heart

Douglas Pojecky is a retired U.S. Navy veteran who is now one of the main caregivers for birds of prey. It was at the Wild at Heart Rescue center in Mississippi where this heartwarming scene occurred.

It was just another normal day at the rescue center as Pojecky made his rounds and paid a visit to a new feather-haired friend.

As he was checking on the injured owl she immediately put both of her wings around him and nestled into his chest.

Pojecky's amazing connection with birds of prey has been noticed by many of his coworkers.

His coworker Timothy Dubuisson, was quoted saying,

"He has a way with the birds of prey that we have never seen before".

The friendly owl was brought in with a concussion, crop infection, and a respiratory infection.

However at this time it has been completely healed and released into the wild once again.
